S.A.V.E .is a small but growing group of Seattle citizens who are asking that Wright Hotels, developer and agent for the Marriott Corp. to redesign the proposed hotel on the waterfront so that it does not obstruct the unique panoramic view of Elliott Bay, Puget Sound and the landforms to the Northwest from that location.
We ask like minded citizens to contact Wright Hotels, the Marriott
Corporation and our elected officials (addresses provided) and
ask them to seek changes in the design of the hotel. We also need
pledges of financial support to fund the legal appeal before the
Shorelines Hearings Board and possibly beyond that to Courts.
The full panormic view from Victor Steinbrueck Park is a natural resources and the property of all Seattle. It should not be sold to Marriott Corp. The view from the Park and from the Alaskan Way Viaduct are supposed to be protected under city law, but an appeal to the Shorelines Hearings Board is needed to re-secure this protection. The public views from the Park and the Viaduct have already been eroded by other Port of Seattle Central Waterfront Projects. We need to stop this deterioration now and make it clear that view protection from public places means something in Seattle, not just nice words in the Comprehensive Plan.

Write a letter today. And email us back a reply to get on our mailing list of supporters. If you can make a financial pledge, please let us know. We need to raise $20,000 or more.
An Open Letter to Mayor Paul Schell, the Port of Seattle Commissioners, Wright Hotels, Marriott Corporation and the Seattle City Council Citizens of Seattle and visitors to Victor Steinbrueck Park place great value on the uninterrupted panoramic view of Elliott Bay from this special place. It is only here that anyone, regardless of economic status, can enjoy the encompassing view which defines our beautiful City. The full enjoyment of it should not be diminished for the benefit of another hotel. Please, re-design the hotel to fit into the Seattle waterfront, not overshadow it!
Wright Hotels has secured a permit from DCLU to develop a 400-room
hotel on Alaskan Way between Blanchard and Lenora on behalf of
Marriott Corporation. As currently designed, the hotel is 9 stories
tall (underlying zoning is 85-feet). At this height, and with
its 3-tower configuration, the hotel will block northwesterly
views of Puget Sound, the Bell St. Pier, Magnolia, and generally
break up the panoramic view of Elliott Bay and the Peninsula available
ONLY from Victor Steinbrueck Park. The mountains will still be
visible, although they will appear to emerge from the roof of
the hotel not across Puget Sound. Although the construction of
this type of hotel on this sight meets the underlying zoning code,
it does not meet the spirit of the design guidelines which were
a condition of the City granting over 126,000 SF of street vacations
to the Port of Seattle for the redevelopment of the harborfront.
The hotel developers are also benefiting by receiving over 34,000
SF of bonus floor area as granted by DCLU. The permit has been
appealed by Irene Wall in order to get a decision from the Shorelines
Hearing Board as to the conflicts between this permit decision
and the Seattle Shoreline Master Program, Seattle SEPA Ordinance,
and Seattle Comprehensive Plan policies which provide for public
view protection, in particular, from Victor Steinbrueck Park and
designated scenic roadways such as the Alaskan Way Viaduct.
It is important that our elected representatives hear directly from anyone opposed to this unnecessary view impact. Wright Hotels should re-design the project to show respect for this unique view that belongs to all of us and should not be sold to the Marriott Corporation.
