mal, a bad dream

Please assume a time gap of two weeks to one month from the previous article mal, a mountain sermon

I had a dream, a sick dream. I was walking along the varamb~ of a paddy field. I was yelling "pazhaya computer vAngngAn ALundOOO?, pazhaya computer vAngngAn ALundOOO?" and I had a heavy bundle of computer junks (monitors, mother boards, floppies) on my head. I looked like the occasional aluminium vessel-vendor on the street.

The the mal corporation had collapsed and had filed for bankruptcy!!.

In another sequence, I was traveling through a lane and house wives were peeking at me and my sale-ware from half closed(open) doors and from the hedges of their backyards. "ente ponnu penngaLE! ee sAmanam onnu vAnngiyAtte! deivam sahAyikkum." I was begging to some of them.

I woke up, alarmed at this despicable situation, waking up Minu (much to her annoyance) on that act. The radio was playing softly, a song which I haven't till now heard. The interesting thing about the song was that it sounded totally new to me and yet it was so suitable to the atmosphere pertaining to my dream.

Well, let me drivel a bit about the present situation at mal. Perhaps that would help the readers understand why in the first place I had a chance to have this dream.

Several bugs have been reported from customers. In the past month, revenue has plummeted quite a bit.

A user who was trying to estimate the approximate complexity of idiyappam got floating point exceptions all over.

In another case, a mal robot, which was plucking coconuts, went on rampage plucking everything it saw around.

Well in our own lab, repeated attempts to get an answer for "kAkka kuLicchAl kokkakumO?" produced the following answers on different runs: "Akum, Akilla, paRayAmbbattilla, aRinnjittenthuvENam?". It is to be noted that the mal compiler is designed to understand all the proverbs and idioms in malayALam, unlike Hymie-the robot in Get Smart.

I have passed that childish stage where one worries about the possibility of dreams coming true. In my dreams,

my close relatives have died several times and I have faced several embarrassing situations. I would worry about a dream as much as I would, about the seconds and minutes of a day.

We are almost sure that the bugs are in the module which encodes the culture of malayALam. The funny thing is that, we don't know whether they are actually bugs. Who knows, may be mal is showing the typical skeptical behavior of a mallu.

An associated joke: In one of our close conversations, tillu joked that we better contact a local pesticide agency for debugging our software.
